A vertical bar is supported at each end by parallel horizontal loaf-springs attached to a vertical post; the post being fixed to a baseplate. Midway up the vertical bar is a horizontal protrusion, supported by a vertical balance spring between its underside and the baseplate. - A load placed on top of the horizontal bar causes an equal bending action on the two loaf-springs, so that the bar remains horizontal but moves nearer to the baseplate. The movement toward the baseplate is measured by a conventional movement detector, e.g. a clock micrometer, or by a transducer which feeds electronic circuitry. The machine is protected against overloads by a vertical post which limits downward movement of the horizontal bar.
