PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed compound in high selectivity and efficiency in reacting an alkylbenzene with a mixed 4C fraction or isobutene to produce the titled compound, by using a specific amount of sulfuric acid in a specific concentration, and reacting the reactants under conditions of a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:An alkylbenzene, e.g. toluene, ethylbenzene, cumene or cyclohexylbenzene, is reacted with isobutene or a 4C fraction containing the above- mentioned compound, particularly a residual spent BB fraction obtained by extracting butadiene from the 4C fraction in the presence of sulfuric acid in an amount not exceeding 30wt% based on the alkylbenzene in >=90%, preferably >=95% concentration at <=40 deg.C, preferably <=20 deg.C, particularly +5--5 deg.C. Thus, the formation of other isomers and oligomerization of the isobutene are suppressed, and the titled compound, e.g. p-tertiary butylethylbenzene, useful for producing heat-resistant polystyrene resin, etc. can be obtained in p-selectivity as high as >=96%. |
