The protective device comprises a box or casing (2) made of strong material such as rust-proof steel, which is unopenable except with the aid of special tools. It can be angled with a horizontal part (2a) which in the assembled condition rests against the top of the vehicle battery, and a vertical part (2b) which locates against the battery side. This arrangement prevents the box being turned when fitted on the battery. - The bottom wall of the box horizontal part (2a) has a hole through which one of the poles of the battery is inserted when the box is fitted. Inside the box is a relay (13) and its operating component which can either be a press button box and an integrated circuit (14) or an electrical key contact. Where the engine being protected is petrol driven, the casing and its contents are attached to a spark plug which it encapsulates with the battery pole to prevent the relay being by-passed.
