PURPOSE:To reduce the occurrence of a track jump in recording and reproduction due to a defect on an optical disk by detecting and storing the sector where the defect is present previously, and allowing a light spot to pass over another nondefective nearby track. CONSTITUTION:when a signal is recorded or reproduced on or from the optical disk with a recording surface having each track divided into plural sectors, the sector where the defect is present is detected previously and information on it is stored in a memory 32 in a disk controller 25. Then, the passing of a light spot 20 over the defective sector is detected previously from the information in the memory 32 to allow a spot 20 to pass over another nondefective track near the track on which the defective sector is present when the spot 20 is expected to pass over the defective sector. Thus, the possibility of a track jump in recording and reproduction due to the defect on a disk 7 is reduced.
