PURPOSE:To attain the effective use of a memory device with an electronic typewriter containing a memory means for data transmitted from outside, by compressing the space data contained in the reception data in order to reduce the data to be stored. CONSTITUTION:A means which discriminates the space data among those transmitted data is provided together with a counter which counts the continuous space data. When the count value of the counter exceeds the prescribed value, the space data is converted into a special data. For instance, four and three space data exist among alphabet letters DEF, GHI and JKL. In such a case, those space data are discriminated by said space data discriminating means and counter and compressed to special data SP4 and SP3 respectively. In case a C/R exists with two and four spaces set between L and X, a space data compression code SP is also omitted. Then the space data is compressed like a C/R4.
