An energy absorption device for supporting the bumper of a vehicle comprises internal 38 and external 24 telescopic cylinders fitted with an orifice for controlling the flow 68 and with an associated metering rod 76 for controlling the flow of the fluid between a pair of fluid chambers 48, 46 which can be contracted and dilated, in order to dissipate the energy of an impact. The orifice for controlling the flow comprises a means 70 for fragile mounting on one 24 of the cylinders, arranged in order to break in response to a predetermined accumulated pressure in one 48 of the chambers, in order thus to increase the dimension of the opening between the chambers and to reduce the pressure, in order to avoid damaging the device. A gas spring 58 situated in the device brings the two cylinders into their spaced-apart position when the impact load on the bumper is eliminated. <IMAGE>
