PURPOSE:To enable improved control of a iquid surface without complicating a device, by a method wherein, in an evaporative cooling type V-engine, the water jackets of each cylinder group are intercommunicated through a communicating passage, extending in an approximately parallel direction, in the vicinity of a cylinder head, and a steam passage is open and connected to the upper part therof. CONSTITUTION:A V-engine 25 has two cylinder groups 27 and 28, and water jackets 30 and 31, each extending between a cylinder block 32 and a cylinder head 33, are formed in the cylinder groups 27 and 28, respectively. The two water jackets 30 and 31 are positioned approximately horizontally so that they are interconnected in the vicinity of the cylinder heads 33 and through a straight communicating passage 34. A steam passage 35 through which steam from the water jackets 30 and 31 is fetched is open to the upper part of the communicating passage 34, and the steam passage 35 is connected to a condenser 7.
