PURPOSE:To surely prevent liquid refrigerant from returning a compressor by reducing the pressure of the refrigerant by means of proportional control valves by a method wherein the maximum opening of the proportional control valves is limited so as not to fall down the dogree of superheat of refrigerant in the respective indoor heat exchangers below the certain fixed value. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of indoor units 10A and 10B, in which indoor heat exchangers 11A and 11B are contained respectively, are forkedly connected to a single outdoor unit 9, in which a compressor 1 and an outdoor heat exchanger 4 are contained. At the same time, proportional control valves 13A and 13B for reducing the pressure of refrigerant are provided on branch pipes, through which the high pressure liquid refrigerant flows into the respective indoor heat exchangers. Adjusting means 36A and 36B to adjust the valve openings of the proportional control valves in proportion to the ratio of the respective deviation values between the respective room temperatures and respective room set temperatures of the indoor units and limiting means 37A and 37B to limit the maximum openings of the proportional control valves with the degrees of superheat of refrigerant at the outlet sides of the respective heat exchangers. In such a manner as mentioned above, the proper operation complying with the wishes is performed and the liquid phase compression of refrigerant is surely prevented from occurring.
