A permanent magnet based on rare-earth cobalt is stabilised in permanent-magnet terms with the aid of an alternating field (6) having a reducing amplitude, without any preceding thermal stabilisation. Such a magnetically weakened permanent magnet does not exhibit any increase in magnetisation when it passes through relatively high temperatures. The alternating field which is used can be produced by an alternating-current pulse produced by discharging an RCL circuit, or by constant-field pulses of alternating polarity. <IMAGE>
