A process for treating surfaces is described, in which the material to be treated, for example iron, an iron alloy or the like, is immersed in a molten bath which has been prepared by addition of 5 to 50 % by weight of a metal-cementing agent consisting of one or more substances from the group comprising the elements of group Va, which contain an element of group Va, elements of the group VIa and substances which contain an element of group VIa, to a salt bath agent, consisting of a neutral salt which, mixed therewith, contains 5 to 30 mol% of a borate. In this way, a carbide of the element of group Va or of the element of group VIa or a composite carbide of these elements is formed on the surfaces of the material. 1 to 10 % by weight of an auxiliary, consisting of one or more substances from the group comprising oxysalts of elements from groups IVa, Va and VIa, and/or 1 to 10 % by weight of metals or alloys thereof from the group comprising metals of the group IVa and alloys thereof can be added to the molten bath, if desired.
