It is frequently necessary to determine the distance between a reference point and an object whose position displays, for example, the filling of a container. In accordance with the invention, use is made for this purpose of a search device in the form of a metal detector. In order for this search device to respond exactly to the object, the more so if metallic parts are situated in its environment, the object is provided with a tuned LC circuit. This LC circuit damps the electromagnetic oscillations emitted by the search device so strongly and with such a steep rising edge that the distance between it and the reference point can be precisely determined. As a result, it is possible to reach a conclusion on the filling of the container or another variable to be determined.
