Wet gas compressed in stages by a multistage compressor 3, 11, 17, 23, 31 is cooled between each stage, to a temperature insufficiently low to allow condensate to precipitate, by a cooling system comprising coolers 5, 15, 21, 27 connected in series and supplied by pumps 35, 78 with cooling water at a rate and/or temperature dependent upon the deviation of the difference between the measured temperature of a point in the cooling system and a measured dew-point temperature of the gas, and a set temperature difference. As described, the temperature at two points in the cooling system is measured by detectors 43, 57 and the dewpoint temperature of the gas is also measured at two points by detectors 9, 29. A controller 68 is adapted to compare the temperatures measured by the detectors 43, 9 with the set value and is arranged to operate accordingly a motor 38 associated with a three-way valve 37 controlling the amount of hot water re-circulated to the system by the pump 78. If the measured temperature difference is decreasing with respect to the set valve, the controller 68 causes the valve 37 to admit a greater amount of hot water to the cooling system. The detectors 29, 57 are associated with a controller 72 arranged to operate via a motor 61 a valve 60 controlling the discharge of water through the cooling system outlet 74. |
