The present invention concerns a lifting appliance consisting of a chassis and a vertical column resting on the chassis and having two tubes telescopically displaceable one inside the other, one of which is firmly connected to the chassis. In addition, the appliance contains arrangements which are constructed in such a way that they give rise to a mutual displacement of the tubes and consequently to a lifting or lowering movement. The invention is distinguished by the fact that the inner tube is firmly connected to the chassis. In addition, the outer tube is provided with a slit running over its entire length. A runner carrying a lifting table or the like is attached in a sliding manner to the outer slit tube. The said arrangement consists of a pull rope, one end of which is connected to the runner and runs over deflection pulleys, attached to both ends of the slit tube, to a winch fastened to the inner tube via the slit.
