Hot synthesis gases generated at a pressure of more than 40 bar are processed by cooling, purification, and if necessary, shift conversion of carbon monoxide. Crude synthesis gas is fed at a high temperature to an expansion turbine and let down with production of work to a lower pressure at which the processing takes place. The processed synthesis gas is recompressed, the energy required for the compression being at least in part provided by the expansion turbine.
