[Also in Division B4] A method of maintaining a desired cutter knife clearance in a cutting tool, e.g. a metal cutting machine comprises maintaining cutter knife supporting elements at a selected substantially constant temperature independently of ambient temperatures and of temperatures due to operation of the cutting tool. In the form shown, pedestals 16, 17, which carry the bearings 14 supporting the journals 12 of a rotary cutter drum 10, are provided with electrical heaters 35 to 38 and temperature sensing bulbs 40, 41 connected by electrical conductors 42 to 44 and 46 to 48 with temperature controllers 45, 49 in turn connected by electrical conductors 50, 51 with a temperature indicator unit 52. Changes in knife clearance may be made by raising or lowering the set temperature of the pedestals. A fly knife 26 mounted in the drum co-operates with an adjustable stationary bed knife 28. Alternatively, the bed knife may be rotated. Means may be provided for cooling rather than heating the pedestals.</p> |
