The double-tube heat exchanger serves, in particular, as a petrol cooler for installation in motor vehicles. The coolant, which is under a relatively high pressure, flows through an inner tube (1), while the medium to be cooled flows through the clearance space between the inner tube (1) and an outer tube (2). The clearance space is in the form of a helical recess (4) on the outside of the inner tube (1), with the result that, to the side of the recess (4), the outer tube rests directly on the inner tube (1). As a result, the outer tube (2) reinforces the strength of the inner tube (1) in relation to pressure loads exerted by the coolant and simultaneously improves the heat transfer between the coolant and the medium to be cooled.
