A method and a device for treating material, in particular for eroding, smoothing, cutting, boring or cleaning, with a high-pressure blast is to be improved in that the jet emerging from a nozzle is already dissolved into droplets shortly after leaving the nozzle mouth without loss of energy. As a result, not only the speed of the jet consisting of individual droplets is to be increased, but its breakdown effect is also to be enhanced. This is achieved in that the high-pressure blast is applied to the surface of the material to be treated from a double-jet or multi-jet nozzle whose jets touch one another in the region of the still coherent jet, that is to say the jet core or the compact jet of constant speed. The jet is applied with such a spacing of the nozzle mouth from the surface to be treated that the surface lies in, or shortly after, the beginning of the breakup of the combined jet or of the dissolution into droplets of the high-pressure blast.
