The production of pig iron from mouldings which consist of lump ore or of fine ores containing iron and optional additives, even today requires the expenditure of very large amounts of energy, particularly if the mouldings have to be fired in order to have sufficient mechanical strength during the reduction process, for example in a reduction blast-furnace. In smelting processes with simultaneous production of a reduction gas in the smelting gasifier, cooling of the reduction gas generated to a temperature below the sticking temperature of the pellets can only be achieved by complex and expensive equipment and procedures. According to the invention, said drawbacks are overcome by the green mouldings (7) being preheated, dried and reduced to sponge iron on a travelling grid (8), using a process gas from a coal gasification reactor (17), making full use of the thermal energy contained in the process gas generated, and being then continuously fed, via a feed shaft (15) which can be sealed in a gas-tight manner, into a coal gasification reactor (17) and being smelted. <IMAGE> |
