PURPOSE:To clean a roll automatically with high efficiency by providing a cleaning head for removing dust adhered onto the surface of sheet carrying roll movably in longitudinal direction of roll while contactably/separatably against the roll. CONSTITUTION:When cleaning a sheet carrying roll 2, a motor 10 is first driven to travel a truck 5 along a rail 9 thus to move to the lower position of specific roll 2. Then a motor 14 is driven to move the rail 9 through a chain 13 in longitudinal direction Y of roll 2. Consequently, a cleaning head 3 mounted on the truck 5 is moved from the retreated position A to specific position B where the roll 2 is contaminated. Thereafter, the cylinder 7 is lifted to contact the cleaning head 3 against the lower face of roll 2 and to rub against the surface of roll 2 through rotation of roll 2 thus to clean off dust adhered onto the surface of roll.
