PURPOSE:To obtain an austenitic hot working tool steel having improved oxidation resistance at high temp. as well as increased strength at high temp. and wear resistance by adding specified amounts of Cr, V, Mo, W and Y to a high Mn austenitic steel having a specified composition. CONSTITUTION:This austenitic hot working tool steel having superior oxidation resistance and high strength consists of 0.40-1.00% C, 0.10-2.0% Si, 9.0-24.0% Mn, 9.0-15.0% Cr, 0.5-6.0% Mo, <=6.0% W (Mo+1/2W=0.5-6.0%), 1.5-3.5% V, 0.005-0.10% Y and the balance Fe with trace impurities or further contains 0.5-8.0% Co and/or 0.5-5.0% Ni. The steel has superior oxidation resistance especially at high temp., superior strength at high temp., superior softening resistance, wear resistance and toughness.
