PURPOSE:To recover coal and oil shale of high purity from coal and oil shale by transforming impurities in coal and oil shale to soluble mineral fluorides or chlorides and further extracting them. CONSTITUTION:Coal or shale is crushed to l30-100 mesh grain size. Crushed coal or shale is lixiviated with HF soln. and the soln. contg. soluble mineral salts and fluorosilicate is separated from the coal or shale, and the coal or shale is washed with water. The washed coal or shale is lixiviated with aq. HCl. Lixiviated coal or shale contg. soluble mineral salts is separated again from the coal or shale, and the coal or shale is washed with water. After heating the coal or shale at ca. 20-100 deg.C in vacuum, it is heated further in dry and inert atmosphere under atmospheric pressure. Thus, residual impurities including HF, HCl, SF4 etc. are removed.
