PURPOSE:To attain precisely tracking without exerting adverse influence upon the transfer of recording media by using the tracking shift information obtained by utilizing the regenerating signal which is only one of plural heads, and controlling the shifting means of the recording media. CONSTITUTION:The rotation phase of the drum motor 6 rotating a rotation drum 5 in the arrow A direction is detected with a rotation phase detector 7. On the other hand, a magnetic tape 9 is driven in the arrow B direction by a capstan 10 and a not-shown pinch roller. The regenerating signal regenerated at heads 1 and 2 is inputted to a tracking signal processing circuit 16 and the tracking control signal is obtained at a circuit 16. In such a way, the difference in level of the tracking signal due to the difference of the head width, etc., will not occur, because the regeneration output signal obtained from 1 head is used and controlling the capstan based upon the tracking shift information of the head, adverse influences such as wow and flutter will not occur.
