PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a non-steroid anti-inflammatory analgesic agent, safely and economically, by reacting biphenyl with succinic anhydride using low-toxic chlorobenzene as the reaction solvent. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound is produced by reacting biphenyl with succinic anhydride in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride using chlorobenzene as the solvent, preferably at 100-120 deg.C, or if necessary at the refluxing temperature of chlorobenzene. The amounts of the succinic anhydride and the anhydrous aluminum chloride used in the above reaction are preferably 0.9- 1.1mol and 2.2-2.5mol per 1mol of biphenyl, respectively.
