A photographic material (see Division G2) comprises gelatin and a compound of formula <FORM:1024808/C3/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, m is 0-20, n is 3 or 4, and M is an alkali metal or ammonium group, In Example (3) a photographic antihalation layer is prepared by coating cellulose triacetate with a colloidal solution of silver containing formalin solution, gelatin and a compound of formula (CH3)3C.CH2 <FORM:1024808/C3/2> The phenol ethers may be prepared by condensing a sultone with an alkylphenol or alkylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate in the presence of an alkali catalyst.
