Bipyridyls are produced by interacting pyridine or a hydrocarbon substituted pyridine with magnesium, and oxidizing the interaction product so formed. The interaction of the pyridine and magnesium is initiated by a substance which can induce the formation of free radicals in the magnesium-pyridine mixture. The initiator may be an alkali metal, e.g. a dispersion of sodium or potassium, or a halogen, e.g. bromine or iodine, present in amount of at least 1% by weight of the magnesium. The interaction product itself also acts as initiator. The interaction is preferably carried out at at least 80 DEG C, and in the presence of a solvent, e.g. excess pyridine. The oxidation may be with elemental oxygen, alone or diluted, or chlorine. A liquid diluent which reduces the viscosity of the mixture may be present. |
