PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound in high purity, by reacting acrylamide, dimethylamine and bormaldehyde using a lower alcohol optionally in combination with a hydrophilic organic solvent as the reaction medium. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by reacting acrylamide with dimethylamine and formaldehyde using a reaction medium comprising a lower alcohol (e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc.) or its conbination with a hydrophilic organic solvent (e.g. acetonitrile). When an alcohol solution of formaldehyde is used as the formaldehyde source in the above reaction, there is little production of Michael addition product in contrast with the case using water as the reaction medium, and the objective compound can be produced in high selectivity. Furhtermore, the reactivity of the amide is extremely high compared with the case using paraformaldehyde as the formaldehyde source.
