PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensively carbon fiber having a random crosssectional structure close to circle, not causing cracks at all, by subjecting pitch having low content of mesophase to melt spinning from a nozzle having a modified section, drawing it into given thinness, making it infusible, carbonizing it. CONSTITUTION:Pitch containing mesophase is subjected to melt spinning, made infusible, and carbonized to give carbon yarn. In the operation, pitch having <=70%-<100% mesophase content is used as a raw material, and it is subjected to melt spinning by the use of a spinneret having a modified section wherein the outer periphery of the nozzle is cut into the center from the circumcircle. The fiber is drawn, a sectional shape close to circle is produced before filaments of the pitch fiber reach fixed thinness, the fiber is made infusible and carbonized, to give the desired carbon fiber having a random cross-sectional structure close to a circle.
