PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display element capable of conducting low- voltage driving, by using a liquid crystal material obtd. by adding a specified compd. to a liquid crystal compsn. contg. a phenylcyclohexane liquid crystal, a cyclohexane ester liquid crystal or a dioxane liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal material obtd. by mixing 20-50wt% compd. of formula V (wherein n is 0, 1; X is F, Cl; R is a 2-5C alkyl) with a liquid crystal compsn. contg. a phenylcyclohexane liquid crystal (PCH) of formula I (wherein R is 2 to 5C) or II (wherein R is 2 to 6C), a cyclohexane ester liquid crystal (ECH) of formula III (wherein R is 1 to 5C) or a dioxane liquid crystal of formula IV (wherein R is 2 to 7C), is sealed in between two sheets of electrode substrates. EFFECT:When visual field angle is 10 deg., temp. is 25 deg. and transmission is 50%, voltage Vsat2 csn be lowered to 0.75-1.2V and the element can be fully driven at 1.5V.
