In the process described, the finest fractions are removed from the moulding sand during and after the emptying of the mould. In order to achieve a rapid and sensitive change of the sludge content of the moulding sand, in such a way that a constant sludge content can be obtained, even when the used sand is loaded with large fluctuations of the sludge content, it is provided according to the invention that such a quantity of the fines fractions is removed on the used sand stretch that the moulding sand definitely has a deficit of sludge, and that the lacking sludge fractions are added, precisely metered, in dependence on continuous manual or automatic sand tests.
