A flat picture screen in which electrons from a gas discharge pass through selected holes (14) in a control plate (3) into a plasma-free space (6), are there subsequently accelerated to several kV and finally strike a phosphor layer (18) has the following construction: the rear part is a flexible metal foil (1) which at the same time acts as the gas-discharge cathode; the control plate (3) is spaced from the foil (1) by means of a plurality of supporting plates (8) and from the front plate (2) by further spacer bodies (10). Such a cell body requires no special production or assembly cost, and is primarily relatively light even when a change is made to large formats. In one particularly simple version, glass supporting plates are inserted between in each case two bracket pairs on the control plate (3), the spacer bodies consist of perforated photo-glass strips (10), and the metal foil (1) is an approximately 0.1 mm thick aluminium trough. Main field of application: VDUs and television sets having an image diagonal > 85 cm. <IMAGE>
