PURPOSE:To produce the titled polymer capable of forming an anisotropic molten phase at about 300 deg.C or below and of being melt-molded into a product of excellent mechanical properties, by reacting a specified aromatic ester compound with a specified dicarboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:A thermally anisotropic aromatic polyester is produced by polymerizing an aromatic ester compound of the formula (wherein X is H, Cl, Br, or CH3) with an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g., sebacic acid) or both of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g., terephthalic acid), etc., according to a usual melt polycondensation process. Although conventional aromatic polyesters have been difficultly melt-molded because they have extremely high melting points or they decompose before reaching their melting points when heated, the aromatic polyester produced by the above process can form an anisotropic molten phase and can be molded by compression or injection molding to produce, for example, fibers, film, tapes, and molded three-dimensional articles.
