Furring (1) which is both suitable for facades and for roofs has a plurality of retaining struts (2, 3) which cross essentially at right angles and, to compensate for thermal expansions, are fixed movably with respect to one another by means of connecting elements (10). For this purpose, the connecting elements (10) have a support plate (11), on which there are arranged bar parts (12, 13) which bound gaps (20, 21) with their mutually opposite faces (16, 17). Furthermore, the support plate (11) is provided with layers (18, 19) of compressible material, which deform when the connecting elements (10) are being fitted and thereby apply the forces required for fixing the retaining struts (2, 3). In this case, retaining strips (7, 8) of the corresponding retaining struts (2, 3) are inserted into the gaps (20, 21), whereby the compressible material is deformed. As a result, at the same time the undisplaceable mounting of the retaining struts (2, 3) and the possibility of compensating for thermal expansions are ensured, since although the compressible material builds up sufficiently high retaining forces it allows the retaining struts (2, 3) to be displaced with respect to one another if thermal expansions occur. <IMAGE>
