In order to achieve a firm but gentle emergency braking, with no adverse effects for personnel and material, on rail-bound vehicles, in particular storage and retrieval units for high-bay warehouses, the travel speed is repeatedly monitored towards the end of the travel way. A trigger lever (19) which is suspended in oscillating fashion on a wheel axle (15) passes with a roller (21) a deflection ramp (22) and, at its end section, a narrow passage (b). When an admissible speed, which is related to a specific location, is exceeded, the trigger lever (19) strikes, thanks to its mass inertia, against a stop (26), is swivelled in this process and thus turns a wheel bearing bushing (18) in which the wheel axle (15) is eccentrically attached. As a result, the vehicle component (7) which loads the wheel (12) is lowered to such an extent that a brake shoe (16) which is connected to it is pressed onto the rail (13) by the weight of this vehicle component and the vehicle is braked. <IMAGE>
