<p>Appts. for clamping a strap, consisting of two or more segments, round the external surface of an ingot mould, is claimed, where rams press the segments against the mould, and a controller is provided so the rams are successively pressed against the middle parts of the segments and then against the remaining parts. The rams pref. consist of pistons located in hydraulic cylinders actuated by the successive operation of control valves, and the rams are pref. mounted in a chassis fitting round the base of the mould; rollers on the chassis permit its travel on the foundry floor. The chassis pref. consists of two frames joined by a hinge so they can be placed round a stationary mould; and the appts. includes welding equipment, so that when the segments have been clamped round the mould their ends are welded together to form a reinforcing strap permanently located on the mould, e.g. round a damaged zone. The ingot moulds are several inches thick and tend to crack near the base due to due to thermal stress after repeated use. The invention is used to weld a reinforcing strap round the damaged part of the mould.</p> |
