PURPOSE:To reduce a vibration of a scanning system, and to stop it exactly at a fixed position by moving the scanning system by inertia when shifting it to a constant speed control state from a damping state, at the time of a returning motion of the scanning system. CONSTITUTION:A preliminary reciprocating motion SCAN-A, RETURN going ahead of copying and a reciprocating motion SCAN-B in case of copying are used as a control data. At the time of a returning motion, when on of a brake switch SW-B is detected in the course of reset by a full power, a damping means operates after a prescribed delay time. When it is decelerated to the first prescribed speed which has been set as a control data, the damping is released, and when it becomes the second prescribed speed which is lower than the former, it is brought to a constant speed control to the home position, and stopped by detecting on of a home switch SW-H. Each step is shifted smoothly by executing an inertia movement between a damping period and a constant speed period.
