NEW MATERIAL:A 4,8-Dimethylbicyclo[3,3,1]nonane derivative shown by the formula I (one of X and Y is 1-5C straight-chain or branched alkoxy, or 2-3C acyloxy, and the other is H, or X and Y are linked to from 0; broken line double bond which may be present). EXAMPLE:4,8-Dimethylbicyclo[3,3,1]nona-7-en-2-ylisopropyl ether. USE:An aromatic having strong fragrance. PREPARATION:A compound shown by the formula II or formula III is reacted with a compound shown by the formula R<1>OH (R<1> is 1-5C straight-chain or branched alkyl) in the presence of an acid catalyst with eliminating formed water, to give a compound shown by the formula IV among the compound shown by the formula I . This compound is optionally subjected to ordinary contact hydrogenation, to give a compound shown by the formula V among the compound shown by the formula I .
