Hydrocarbons, preferably those containing 4-7 C and including paraffins and olefins are dehydrogenated by contact in the vapour phase at at least 250 DEG C. with from 0.2 to 2.5 mols. per mol. of oxygen and a catalyst comprising Fe, P and O and a metal selected from Mg, Zn, Co, Ni and mixtures thereof such that the ratio P:Fe is 0.002 to 0.25:1 and the ratio other metal:Fe is 0.05 to 2:1. Reference is made to the dehydrogenation of butenes-1 and -2, 2-methylbutenes-2 and -3, n-butane, 1:3-butadiene, methyl butane, 2-methyl pentene-1, cyclohexene, and 2-methylpentene-2. Examples describe the dehydrogenation of butene-2 to butadiene.ALSO:Dehydrogenation catalysts comprise (1) Fe (2) P and (3) one or more of Mg, Zn, Co, and Mi such that the ratio 2/1 =0.002 to 0.25/1 and 3/1 =0.05 to 2/1 . The catalyst may be conventionally supported on e.g. Al2O3 pumice or SiC. The catalyst may additionally contain Si e.g. as SiO2 and/or Mn. The Fe may be present as a ferrite and P as a phosphate. The dehydrogenation may be effected in the presence of a halogen-containing vapour. If desired the catalysts may be prereduced e.g. in hydrogen. Regenation of the catalysts may be effected by burning off coke followed by reduction. |
