A method of preparing a detergent lubricating oil comprises the steps of (a) oxidizing a petroleum lubricating oil fraction (e.g. by blowing air at 150-200 DEG C.), (b) mixing the oxidized fraction with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble organic salt or a water-soluble base of a Group II or III metal, the aqueous solution containing 1-10 times the quantity of metal theoretically equivalent to the acidity of the oxidized oil, and (c) dehydrating the mixture by heating. The first stage is preferably continued until the oil has an acid value of 0.5-4 mg. KOH/g. Salts and bases suitable for use in stage (b) include calcium and magnesium acetates, and barium hydroxide. Zinc dithiophosphate may be added to the oil so prepared.
