NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I (R is H, 1-10C alkyl, 1- 4C alkoxy, 2-5C alkoxycarbonyl, etc.; m is 1-4; Y is 1-4C alkylene; Z is quaternary ammonium; M is Cr, or Co; X<-> is anion). USE:A developing agent for electrophotography. Having improved electron controlling action, showing extremely stable electrification characteristics. When the compound is used for dyeing or coloring natural fiber, or synthetic fiber or plastic, it has high fastness. PREPARATION:A diazo component shown by the formula II is diazotized by a conventional procedure, this diazo compound is coupled with a coupling component shown by the formula III to synthesize a monoazo compound shown by the formula IV, and this monoazo compound is heat-treated with a chromizing imparter (e.g., sodium chromium salicylate) or a cobaltizing imparter in water or an organic solvent to give a compound shown by the formula I .
