PURPOSE:To obtain a product alloy having superior magnetic characteristics by specifying a reduction diffusion reaction when a Cu substituted R2Co17 type permanent magnet alloy having a specified composition is manufactured by a direct reduction diffusion process. CONSTITUTION:When a permanent magnet alloy represented by a formula R(Co1-x-y-zFexCuyMz)A (where R is one or more kinds of rare earth elements such as Sm, Ce and Pr, M is one or more among Si, Ti, Zr, Mn, V, Nb, Cr, Mo and Hf, 0.01<=x<=0.40, 0.02<=y<=0.25, 0.005<=z<=0.15, and 6<=A<=8.5) is manufactured, the oxides of said rare earth elements (R) are mixed with metallic Co, Fe and M powders or partially or entirely oxidized Co, Fe and M and Ca and/or CaH2 as a reducing agent. The mixture is heated to 1,100-1,300 deg.C to cause a reduction diffusion reaction, and the resulting reaction product is washed in cold water at <=20 deg.C unit the amount of residual Ca is reduced to <=0.3wt%. Thus, the desired permanent magnet alloy is obtd.
