An electrode for use in an alkaline storage battery is produced by electro-depositing from an aqueous bath containing from 3 to 245 g/1 of cadmium ion and from the stoichiometric value for Cd Cl2 based on the Cd present to 190 g/1 of chloride ion on to a conducting substrate which is inert under conditions existing in the battery, using a cathodic current density from 1 to 60 ma/sq.cm., to obtain an adherent and a coherent electrochemically-active cadmium sponge deposit e.g. 0.005 to 0.014 inch thick on the substrate, e.g. a foil of Ni, Cu, Fe or steel with or without a preliminary Cd plating thereon; substrates of metal gauze, perforated foils or expanded metal may be used. The bath preferably contains Cd Cl2 and KCl to give the above concentrations, but may be made up from the sulphate, nitrate, acetate or phosphate of cadmium with Na, Ca, or other alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorides. Up to 5 g/1 dextrin and 15 g/1 NiCl2 may also be added. |
