The invention relates to a fast-neutron nuclear reactor fitted with emergency cooling means 34. These means 34 comprise an auxiliary exchanger 36 suspended from the slab 12 sealing the vessel 10 containing the core 20 of the reactor, and a pipe 38 directly connecting the output of the exchanger 36 to the base unit 22 for supplying the core. A valve 40 is set in the pipe 38. This valve is normally closed under the effect of the pressure prevailing in the base unit 22. The valve 40 opens automatically when the pressure in the base unit falls because of a stoppage of the primary pumps 28. The exchanger 36 and valve 40 assembly may be dismounted by virtue of the incorporation in the pipe 38 of a segment 56 allowing simultaneously a certain differential expansion between the components. <IMAGE>
