High melting ethylene-carbon monoxide copolymer prodn. - using an organic acid peroxy ester catalyst under mild conditions

Ethylene-CO copolymers are prepared by reacting the monomers in the presence of a epoxy ester of an organic acid having a 10 hr. half-life temp., determined in 0.2M benzene soln., =60 degrees C. The copolymers have potential value as engineering plastics. Copolymers having high m.pts. and CO content are obtd. in good yields at relatively low temps. and moderate press. In an example, ethylene and CO are reacted at 62-67 degrees C. and 640-700 psig. in the presence of t-butyl peroxypivalate to give a copolymer of m.pt. 135-145 degrees C and CO content 44-68%.
