PURPOSE:To obtain a thin film optical control element which can control the light, which is transmitted across a thin film surface, stably in a high speed, by forming a pair or more electrodes and seal materials covering electrodes successively on a substrate where a dielectric thin film is grown. CONSTITUTION:A dielectric thin film 22 is grown on a substrate 21, and comb- shaped counter electrodes 23 are provided on this thin film 22, and a seal material thin film 24 (for example, an SiO2 thin film or a high polymer thin film) is formed on electrodes 23. A polarizer 25 and an analyzer 26 are arranged in the crossed nicols state in the incidence side and the exit side of the optical control element constituted in this manner, and they are so set that a random light 27 is polarized linearly through the polarizer 25 and is modulated at 0 deg. or 180 deg. in accordance with the state of electric field impression of the optical control element. Consequently, an output 28 passing the analyzer 26 is dark in case of modulation at 0 deg. and is bright in case of modulation at 180 deg.. Thus, the thin film optical control element whose response speed is higher than a nanosecond is obtained. |
