Measurement taking is carried out by the detection of a chosen parameter at an appropriate depth in a borehole, and includes the step of the transmitting to the surface, via a suitable channel of a valuable succession of measurements, each of which has two characteristics, the first being an indication of the value of the parameter, whilst the second is independent of the parameter, in a technique for carrying out simultaneous measurement taking and borehole drilling. A first signal is produced which represents a superimposing of the valuable succession of measurements and a disturbing succession of measurements, which are generated in the channel and are derived from specific drilling activities. A second signal is also produced having the second characteristic or representing the disturbing succession of measurements. This second signal is used to derive from the first signal, a resultant signal which represents the valuable succession of measurements.
