PURPOSE:To obtain an optical isolator which is small in size and is easy to use by using an optical fiber polarizer provided with a multilayered body formed by cutting a bow-shaped groove to an optical fiber from the side face to the core thereof and laminating alternately dielectric layers and metallic layers thinner than said layers therein. CONSTITUTION:Ordinary single mode optical fibers 2, 2 are coupled to both sides of a Faradary rotation type optical fiber 1 cut to a suitable length. A bow- shaped groove 9 including the core is cut out from the side face of the fiber 1 or 2 in such a way that the base 10 parallels with the optical axis. The groove 9 is provided to have 45 deg. twist angle at two points so as to sandwich the whole or a part of the fiber 1. A multilayered body C laminated alternately with dielectric layers A and metallic layers B thinner than said layers is embedded into such groove 9 and a mechanism for impressing a magnetic field is provided around the fiber 1 to generate a magnetic field in the axial line direction. |
