The invention relates to a compact vehicle for cleaning surfaces, particularly for ridding pavements of the rubbish thrown onto them, such as papers, packaging, cigarette stubs, public transport tickets, leaflets or other waste. The vehicle according to the invention is characterised in that it comprises a motor-driven turbine unit 7-10 capable of generating a vacuum in a leaktight vessel 2, to which are connected, on the one hand, a suction conduit 3 whose mouth is provided with a suction head 15 facing the ground, and, on the other hand, a flexible and movable picking-up tube 4, a control member 18 ensuring, as desired by the operator, that the suction conduit 3 and/or the picking-up tube 4 are placed at a reduced pressure.
