A completely problem-free application which is associated with little expenditure of time is ensured in a method of sterilising a quantity of liquid, in particular a quantity of water, if an electric current is passed for a specified minimum time through the quantity of liquid to be sterilised. Even an electric current of less than 1.0 A for a time of substantially less than 30 min is sufficient to completely sterilise a quantity of water bacteriologically and virologically. The current should be passed through the liquid using a carbon anode and a silver or platinum cathode. A suitable device expediently comprises a liquid container (1), an anode (2) projecting into the liquid container (1), a cathode (3), and a current source (4), in particular a battery, connected to the anode (2) and the cathode (3). The components of such a device can readily be integrated so that the device as a whole has the outward appearance of a "normal" drinking beaker. <IMAGE>
