Hollow glass sphere microcarrier for the cultivation of cell cultures and process for the cultivation of cell cultures

Hollow silicate glass microspheres which are used as microcarriers for anchorage-dependent cell cultures, and a process for the production of such microspheres are described. In this production process, the density of the microspheres can be matched accurately to the density of the culture medium by initially producing shells with an excessive density and then immersing the excessively dense shells in an etching solution which has the density of the culture medium. When the shells become able to float they are removed from the solution.
