The subject matter of the invention is a device for setting the planing depth in a portable power planer, which device is arranged in an extension of the planer housing and comprises a rotatable setting handle, acting on an adjusting spindle mechanically connected to the bearing plate of the planer, as well as indicating means in the form of a scale graduation and an indicating window which indicate the planing depth set in each case. In a setting device of this type, in order to eliminate the risk of a functional impairment due to planing chips or other foreign bodies generated during the working operation and in order to obtain a simple and clear indicating scale, the invention provides for the setting handle (5) to be provided with a gear (6) which can be coupled to the adjusting spindle (9) and is in mesh with an intermediate gear (11) which is arranged axially parallel to it and acts on a scale element (14, 25) having an internal tooth system (13) and, upon actuation of the setting handle, displaces this scale element (14, 25) relative to an indicating window (16) made in the machine housing. <IMAGE>
